Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: What Part of the Original FF7 Will It Cover?

The latest Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth trailer gave us some big hints about how much of the original game it’ll cover. It’s the second game in the trilogy, so we know it’ll have to pack quite a bit of content in, especially since FF7 Remake just made it through Midgar. But what will the beginning and stopping point for FF7 Rebirth?

What parts of the original Final Fantasy 7 will FF7 Rebirth contain?

We only have the plot of the original Final Fantasy 7 to go on when trying to determine what parts Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will cover. In the Summer Game Fest trailer, we saw these areas (presented in the order we saw them in the original):

  • Midgar
  • Area around Midgar/Kalm
  • Kalm Inn
  • Nibelheim (Past)
  • Chocobo Ranch
  • Mythril Mine
  • Junon
  • Cargo Ship
  • Cosmo Canyon
  • Northern Crater (Vision?)

If Rebirth follows roughly the same path as the original, as Remake did, we can infer the following locations will also be in the game:

  • Fort Condor
  • Costa del Sol
  • Mt. Corel
  • North Corel
  • Gold Saucer
  • Corel Prison
  • Gongaga

Of course, things could take a turn, and the party could visit these locations in a completely different order (or not at all). However, I think we’ll at get to visit at least most of the areas above.

The big question is where the game will end. Disc 1 of the original Final Fantasy 7 concluded with Aerith’s death. However, I think the Northern Crater is the earliest likely stopping point for the game. It’s at this point that the party is at its lowest, and it’s likely that even in this new timeline, their visit to this location is going to be tough.

However, the major wildcard to this whole thing is Zack’s story. He’s still alive in what appears to be another timeline. It’s possible the big “it’s on two discs” hint that Square Enix keeps repeating might indicate that we may be playing through the same time period in two separate timelines. In this case, all bets are off regarding story structure.
