Starfield Respec: Can You Change Skills, Traits, and Background?

A Starfield respec is something that players who want to change their character are looking for. Character creation is complicated, since it gives you a range of backgrounds and traits to choose from. It can also be difficult to figure out what skills to invest in, if you’re not following a tier list, so there may be some choices you made early in the game that you want to alter. Here’s whether you have the ability to respec your background, traits, and skills in Starfield.

Is there a Starfield respec for backgrounds, traits, and skills?

No, there is no respec for backgrounds, traits, and skills in the game.

While you have the ability to change your character’s facial appearance and body type by going to any number of Enhance facilities, you cannot alter your background, traits, or skills. Even the game’s new game plus feature doesn’t allow you to change your character’s background or traits, though the game does allow you to remove traits in specific ways. We have not found a way to learn new traits in the game.

The good news is that you are able to amass a lot of additional skill points. It’s still uncertain what the level cap of the game is, but given that there are 90 skills with 4 ranks each, we wouldn’t be surprised if the max level cap is over 300. This is why we recommend in our skills tier list that you choose skills which are effective for almost any build.

If you really want to redistribute or reallocate your skill points, you will need to install a mod that may allow you to do that. There may also be some console commands that you can try to change your character’s features or earn more XP for skill points. If you’re playing Starfield on Xbox consoles, though, you likely won’t be able to apply console commands or mods.

Starfield Respec FAQ

Q: Can you respec your character’s backgrounds, traits, and skills in Starfield?

A: No, Starfield doesn’t offer a respec option for backgrounds, traits, or skills. While you can adjust your character’s appearance at Enhance facilities, you can’t change these core attributes.

Q: If I’m unhappy with a trait I chose, can I remove or replace it in-game?

A: While you can’t respec traits, the game does offer specific ways to remove certain traits. However, there’s no current method to learn new traits once the game has started.

Q: Are there alternative ways to redistribute skill points or make changes if I regret my choices?

A: If you want to reallocate your skill points, you might have to rely on mods or console commands. However, be aware that if you’re playing on Xbox consoles, you might not have access to these options. On the bright side, the game offers an abundance of skill points, potentially allowing for a lot of flexibility in skill selection over time.
