You’re not alone if you’re experiencing crashes in Lords of the Fallen on PC. Many players are finding that the game crashes to desktop when attempting to load the main menu. Others can get into character creation before the game locks up. Unfortunately, there’s no definitive cause for these issues, and they seem to be affecting people at random instead of being hardware-specific.
Is there a way to fix Lords of the Fallen crashing?
As of right now, there’s no definitive fix for Lords of the Fallen crashing to desktop. The devs have released a list of suggestions, but from personal experience, they don’t work for everyone. Strangely, I was able to play the game without a single crash before the Day 0 patch. After that, I found it crashes every single time I try to load the main menu.
Here’s a list of the things I’ve tried that failed to fix the issue:
- Launched the game as an administrator.
- Updated my drivers.
- Rolled back to a previous driver.
- Reinstalled the game.
- Installed the game on another SSD.
- Reinstalled Windows.
I spent around five hours trying to get Lords of the Fallen to stop crashing. Every time it happened, the following error popped up in the crash log:
“Fatal error: [File:Unknown] [Line: 345] ShaderCodeArchive::DecompressShader(): Could not decompress shader (GetShaderCompressionFormat=Oodle)”
The game builds shaders as it’s loading the main menu, so it seems like an issue with that process causes it to crash. The developers have provided the following instructions for those who are having problems, but they did nothing to alleviate the issue for me:
“We’re sorry to hear that you’re having trouble with performance playing our game.
To help alleviate performance issues on PC we strongly recommend using the “AUTO-SET” option within the game’s Settings menu under the Graphics tab, which will apply settings that are best suited to your PC configuration and will optimise performance.
We also highly recommend that you update your graphics drivers to the latest version. Please find some useful links below:
Nvidia: https://www.nvidia.com/en-gb/geforce/drivers/
AMD: https://www.amd.com/en/supportIf that still doesn’t work, please try deleting your PSOs by following the steps below:
- Go to: “X:\Users\MYUSER\AppData\Local\LOTF2\Saved\”
- Delete the *.UPIPELINECACHE file
- Right click on the game. Select ‘Properties’ – ‘Installed Files’ – Click on “Verify Integrity of Caché”
If you’re still experiencing issues, please send an email to [email protected]”
Since the previous version of the game worked, this issue will likely require a patch to correct. So, you’re better off waiting for an update than taking drastic measures to fix it.
