Imagine you're a video game developer with a shooter slated for May 17th. Your game is releasing against The Witcher 2 and Fable III on the PC. Hey! That's not a bad date. You could really move some units.
Oh SHIT! LA Noire is also scheduled for the date. Maybe you're not so comfortable with your date anymore. Your mind drifts to Split/Second and Alan Wake, two semi-high profile games that released against Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption.
Bethesda Softworks, the minds behind May's Brink found themselves in such a predicament. Luckily they've finished their game early and have pushed the release date up a week to May 10th. Europe will see the game on May 13th. Bethesda's Pete Hines had this to say:
Production wraped on Brink earlier than we planned and we didn't see any reason to keep gamers from getting their hands on this highly anticipated game as soon as it was ready. It's apparent from the tremendous reaction so far that people are eager to jump online and play, and if we can make that happen earlier – we're going to.
I can just hear all the cynical gamers furiously pounding on their keyboards about pre-release DLC production and all kind of other bull shit they'll find to complain about before Brink's new release date. Oh hey! There's a comments section for that! I know how cynical the GR community can be.
