PlayStation Network Suffers 5th Consecutive Day of Downtime [Update]

[Update] Just as we were pushing this post live, Sony's Patrick Seybold, Sr. Director of Corporate Communications and Social Media, addressed the situation, citing that they're still working on it but are still unable to comment as to when the service might resume. Here's the full rundown:

I know you are waiting for additional information on when PlayStation Network and Qriocity services will be online. Unfortunately, I don’t have an update or timeframe to share at this point in time.

As we previously noted, this is a time intensive process and we’re working to get them back online quickly. We’ll keep you updated with information as it becomes available. We once again thank you for your patience.

[Original Article] If you own a PlayStation 3, chances are that you're pretty upset. You're upset because the PlayStation Network has been down for a total of 5 days, including a Holiday when many people were off of work and want to kick back, relax and pwn some n00bs.

What's worse is that there hasn't been much word from Sony as to what's going on, or when the service is expected to resume. At first, users were understanding, but that has since turned into outrage and panic. That panic is evident by Google's #1 search term this week: "PlayStation Network down".

This has come at a particularly bad time for Sony. Two major blockbuster titles have just been released in Mortal Kombat and Portal 2, leaving anyone who eagerly awaited those games to be without some key features — features that are there in the game, but their console is rendering those features inaccessible and outright useless.

Many argue that Sony should do something to compensate users for the outage, while the other side argues that the service is free, there's nothing to compensate for. Others have given up on the PlayStation Network, opting for the Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE. Something which Microsoft is surely welcoming.

How about you? What are your thoughts about this extended downtime? What should Sony do to gain forgiveness from users, and what have you done to pass the time until the service comes back up?
