Fortnite World Cup 2019 Announced by Epic Games

Epic Games has announced the Fortnite World Cup 2019 after it hosted one of its biggest eSports competitions yesterday at E3 2018. It is arguably at its most popular now after the Nintendo Switch release was recently confirmed at the Nintendo Direct E3 2018 conference. This will be the first official eSports event for the battle royale game.

According to a recent news post on the official Epic Games site, the battle royale game has reached a whopping 125 million players in less than a year. Alongside that milestone, we now know what the developer has been planning to do with that $100 million prize pool. Fortnite is the latest multiplayer game to join the likes of DOTA 2, League of Legends, and Overwatch in hosting its own global tier competition.

Fortnite World Cup qualifiers will start in Fall 2018 and it will end with the inaugural Fortnite World Cup some time in 2019. The $100 million prize pool will be divided between events at different levels of competition around the globe, which will culminate with the Fortnite World Cup. The competition will have a huge focus on Solos and Duos.

The difference between the Fortnite World Cup and the Overwatch World Cup? Any Fortnite player will be able to participate. Epic Games has decided not to sell licensed teams and franchises. More details and information about the Fortnite World Cup will be revealed in the future. That includes the Rules, Player Code of Conduct, the specific platforms and the Fall 2018 schedule.

The battle royale game player base is surely going to spike since it went live for the Nintendo Switch yesterday. However, it’s truly unfortunate PS4 players as it has also been confirmed that Sony has blocked the ability for cross-play between the PS4 and Nintendo Switch versions. This has always been the case for PS4 players, including for games like Rocket League.
