Nvidia Announces New Handheld Gaming Device At CES 2013

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) for 2013 is underway, and Nvidia has kicked off the gaming sector with Project Shield, a new handheld gaming device that will play both Android and PC games.

The device implements Nvidia's new Tegra 4 mobile processor, and plays any Android games available from Google Play and Nvidia TegraZone. It can also stream PC games from a nearby PC or on Steam. Nvidia also announced that Project Shield will have apps for Hulu and Netflix as well as other Android apps.

Players can use either the 5-inch, 1280×720 HD retinal multi-touch display on the handheld or use Steam's Big Picture mode and play the games on your TV.

The handheld also includes ports for HDMI, headphones, mini-USB, and a microSD memory card. It sounds like nothing has been left out of what users could possibly need for their gaming experience.

But how is the battery life? Considering all of the reported problems with the battery life of the Wii U controller, and how short the battery life for current portables are, you may be pleased to hear that Engadget has reported up to 10 hours of battery life for playing games, and 24 hours of life for watching videos.

No price has been set, but Project Shield is expected to release in the second quarter of this year.
