DmC Launch Sales Bust In Japan, Performs Worse Than All Predecessors

Devil may fail?

Media Create's figures for the week of January 14th to January 20th place DmC: Devil May Cry at the top, but even that's not quite enough. With fewer than 116,000 units sold across two platforms, it has failed to meet even the lowest first-week sales numbers in Japan for the series. Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening has now moved to being the second worst performer with over 190,000 units sold in its first week, a respectable margin over its younger—and stranger looking—brother.

DmC was certainly no stranger to controversy prior to release, and it appears that did more harm than good. We found the game to be delightful, so it's safe to say that poor execution isn't a factor. You can't blame the genre, either, when God of War III was able to break 1.2 million units sold in the same time frame only two years ago. Yep, DmC is just a sales bust (so far).

In case you're wondering, the Xbox 360 version sold less than 5,724 units while the PlayStation 3 version sold precisely 110,429. The question is who's doing worse in Japan, Microsoft or the new Dante?
