Gears Of War: Judgment, God Of War: Ascension Sales Underwhelm

Last month brought the release of two major platform exclusives, one for the PlayStation 3 and one for the Xbox 360. Sadly, neither managed to perform all that well, making for a disappointing March for both Sony and Microsoft.

According to an investor note from Cowen & Company (courtesy of Games Industry), Gears of War: Judgment sold a measly 425,000 units. Compare that to the 2 million copies that Gears of War 3 sold in its first month, and Judgment's performance appears all the more pathetic.

The same goes for God of War: Ascension, which only sold 360,000 units during March. In case you've forgotten, God of War III sold over 1 million in its first month when it launched in March three years ago. 

So why the lackluster sales? Could it be that consumers simply aren't interested in side stories? Does a game need a number at the end of the title to be worth purchasing? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
