PSVR headset will be compatible with PS5, Sony confirms

Current PSVR headsets will work with the PS5, Sony has confirmed. The company’s Mark Cerny has stated that VR is “very important” to its future plans, revealing that those who currently own a PlayStation VR will be able to use it with the next-gen console.

The PSVR has received a surprising amount of support from Sony, with the virtual reality headset being the focal point of its recent PlayStation State of Play presentation. While Cerny did not reveal whether or not Sony is planning a successor to the PSVR for the PS5, he did state that the current iteration of the headset would work on the upcoming console.

“I won’t go into the details of our VR strategy today,” Cerny said in an interview with Wired, “beyond saying that VR is very important to us and that the current PSVR headset is compatible with the new console.”

This will be welcome news for PSVR owners, as they won’t be forced to keep a hold of their PS4 consoles in order to be able to use the pricey headset. The PS5 will be capable of outputting in an 8K resolution, so the PSVR should also receive a bump in its technical capabilities when hooked up to the upcoming console.

The Wired report reveals several details pertaining to the PS5. Elsewhere in the interview, it was revealed that the console would be backward compatible with the PS4, meaning that owners of the current-gen system will be able to play their games on the next-gen console. Mark Cerny even potentially hinted that Death Stranding will be a two-platform release, with it potentially set to launch on both the PS4 and PS5.
