Yakuza Online reaches two million players

Yakuza Online, Sega’s Japan-only free-to-play game for mobile and PC, just reached a milestone of two million players. This is significant for any title, though a little less surprising for a franchise of this caliber. Regardless, in-game celebrations have been put in place to memorialize the occasion. Players who complete the in-game tutorial by May 17 will earn 200 Diamonds, two million in-game currency, four Staminan 50 drinks, two Double-Up Coins, and 200 Donpachi medals.

The game came out late last year and brought in one million players in just a week. Though it took a little longer for the next million, this growth is still something to appreciate. Yakuza Online follows Ichiban Kasuga, the subsequent character after Kazuma Kiryu, the series’ main protagonist after the events of Yakuza 6: The Song of Life. Events proceed in Kamurocho, Tokyo, where Kasuga is just free of prison.

Online, also known as Ryu ga Gotoku in Japan, seems to have made waves. However, keep in mind that this isn’t a traditional Yakuza experience. Instead, it has elements of Japan’s “gacha” games. These titles have a focus on lootboxes and push players to spend money to progress. That said, they’re usually reasonable, and players don’t feel too ripped off, at least in Japan. Gacha has become a favorite mobile approach for mobile titles over in the East.

As of now, we don’t know much about an English version of the game. Anyone outside of Japan will have to settle for that version if they want to play it right now. That said, with so many Yakuza titles making their way west, we can probably expect Online to head over here sometime soon. We also know that Yakuza Kiwami 2 will be on PC soon, and Yakuza 5 is getting a PS4 remaster as well. Oh, and the next Yakuza title has been teased, which should bring in Kasuga as the main hero.
