Slack is down for many users across PC, Mac, iOS, and Android, hindering the workflow of those using the application to coordinate with colleagues. This period of downtime has terrible timing as it’s the first day back to work for many. With most office jobs now being carried out from home, a Slack outage can have a devastating impact, especially if it lasts for a long time.
How long has Slack been down for on January 4, 2021?
Slack has been down since 10 AM ET/7 AM PT on January 4, 2021.
The developers behind Slack were quick to acknowledge the problems on the “status.slack.com” site, stating the following:
Customers may have trouble loading channels or connecting to Slack at this time. Our team is investigating and we’ll follow up with more information as soon as we have it. We apologize for any disruption caused.
Half an hour later, the Slack devs posted a new update that stated that the team were “still investigating”:
We’re still investigating the ongoing connectivity issues with Slack. There’s no additional information to share just yet, but we’ll follow up in 30 minutes. Thanks for bearing with us.
At the time of writing, this third update was the final message from the Slack devs. Unfortunately, there isn’t yet a solution.
We’re continuing to investigate connection issues for customers, and have upgraded the incident on our side to reflect an outage in service. All hands are on deck on our end to further investigate. We’ll be back in a half hour to keep you posted.
Slack is showing “Outages” across the board on the official website. This covers logins, connections, messaging, link previews, posts, notifications, calls, search, apps, and workspace admin.
When will Slack be working again?
Based on previous outages, it could either be minutes or multiple hours before Slack is working again.
As detailed in the dev statements above, “all hands are on deck” with trying to fix this issue. Hopefully that means it will be resolved sooner rather than later.
In the meantime, apps like Discord can provide a nice alternative for when Slack has its problems. Having a backup option is always good for situations like this as it enables teams to keep working efficiently.
