Ubisoft and Lucasfilm Games are working on an open-world Star Wars game

Ubisoft and Lucasfilm Games are collaborating on a single-player, open-world Star Wars game, it has been revealed. The upcoming project is being developed by Ubisoft Massive, the studio behind The Division 2, with it set to tell an original story within the galaxy far, far away.

This new announcement shows that Disney is stepping away from EA, the game publisher that has owned the exclusivity rights to Star Wars since 2013. After the announcement of Lucasfilm Games earlier this week, it was revealed that Bethesda was collaborating with the company on an Indiana Jones game. Now, Ubisoft has also revealed that it’s working on its own Star Wars game, marking another huge developer working with the blockbuster IP.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot released the following statement (via Wired):

“The Star Wars galaxy is an amazing source of motivation for our teams to innovate and push the boundaries of our medium. Building new worlds, characters and stories that will become lasting parts of the Star Wars lore is an incredible opportunity for us, and we are excited to have our Ubisoft Massive studio working closely with Lucasfilm Games to create an original Star Wars adventure that is different from anything that has been done before.”

Ubisoft Star Wars game will be part of the same canon

It was also confirmed by Wired that both the Lucasfilm Games and EA’s previous Star Wars output will be part of the same canon as all of the franchise’s other media, including the sequel trilogy and TV series such as The Mandalorian. While this doesn’t mean that the Ubisoft game will directly tie into any of these events, it means that it will still be set within the same continuity, as will EA’s previous output such as Jedi: Fallen Order (which recently received its big next-gen update).

This is huge news for Star Wars games, as it shows that Lucasfilm Games is not only opening up the franchise to other publishers but that it’s also collaborating with the biggest names in the industry. Ubisoft has yet to release any further details regarding the game, but now that EA’s exclusivity deal with Disney has expired — or was brought to an end earlier than expected, as has yet to be clarified — we will hopefully receive more information sooner rather than later. Let’s just hope that this open-world game isn’t canceled.
