Xbox One Owners Trolled Into Bricking Their Consoles Trying To Unlock Backward Compatibility

The Xbox One isn't backwards compatible with Xbox 360 games. There is no way around this. But hilariously deceitful trolls from 4chan put together a small instructional image that claimed to have a workaround that unlocked Xbox 360 compatibility by accessing the Developer Console. But instead, it's bricking unsuspecting morons brand new Xbox One consoles they just spent $500+ on.

Why anyone would beleive this is beyond me, but there are likely countless users out there sitting in their homes with a bricked Xbox One as a result of trying this. It got so bad, that Xbox's Major Nelson took to Twitter to try and stop people from falling victim to this lie by reiterating that the Xbox One is not backward compatilble with the 360, and never will be. He did get a deserving response from one Twitter user, saying "You said the same thing about the always online thing".

This isn't the first time an image went around like this that cost people a lot of money. In recent months, I saw a similar image that appeared to be an Apple web page stating that the newest iOS update, iOS7, enabled protection against water damage, prompting idiots to test out the new "feature" on their expensive smartphones their parents bought them. Another such trick said that microwaving a smartphone or tablet could recharge its battery if a regular charger wasn't available. The result? Melted phones, and lighter wallets.

Don't be stupid. Don't fall victim. Think.
