Better Call Saul: Here’s What Was Said in That Phone Booth Call With ‘Kim’

Better Call Saul season 6 episode 11 was a tense ride, continuing to chart Jimmy a.k.a. Gene f.k.a. Saul’s steady descent into a Heisenberg-like figure. Fans have been captivated by Saul’s relationship with Kim throughout the show, which came to a head this series when she left him. However, in the latest episode, Gene seemingly made contact with his ex-wife and it didn’t seem to go so well.

In episode 11, fittingly titled ‘Breaking Bad,’ Saul enters a phone booth to talk to his former secretary Francesca. After keeping her on the call to ask her questions about his former associates — it turns out leading an alternate life as a Cinnabon manager can make you really miss the old days — Francesca informs him that Kim had been in touch.

Upon hearing mention of Kim, Saul then makes the decision to call her; in the English version of the episode, this exchange is completely inaudible, with the camera panning out to the road while the sound of passing trucks muffle Saul’s voice. But a viewer in Germany has noted how the German dub doesn’t do as good a job of this, giving us some insight into was said in that call. And it’s not good news for “Gene.”

What happened in Better Call Saul’s phone booth call with Kim?

Reddit user u/FFIXwasthebestFF was the first to point out that the German dub of the episode provided some insight into Saul’s phone booth conversation. We’ve watched the German version of the episode on Netflix and can confirm that viewers can hear part of the conversation, unlike the English version.

The Redditor provided the German text for the conversation, and the translation reads:

“You have no idea what I did or didn’t do, okay? Why don’t YOU stand up, you don’t have to consider me, I can only be hanged ONCE. Okay, listen, Kim, why are we even talking about this. We’re both too smart…”

How the Better Call Saul phone call leads to the season 6 finale

This call had potentially terrible ramifications for Saul, who proceeded to revert back to his old ways after smashing up the phone booth. This is clarified by the show’s writer Thomas Schnauz, who said in a new interview with Hollywood Reporter:

“He’s doing this because something about that phone call brought up a lot of pain and hurt. And as we know from the past — and all that went down with Howard Hamlin, and Kim hiding the truth about Lalo and the reasons why she did it, and the breakup that happened — it all caused a lot of pain that pushed him into going full Saul Goodman.”

So there you have it; Saul was talking to Kim after all (if the German dub is to be believed) and this phone call continued him along his dark descent. With there only being two episodes left of season 6, it seems that this phone call will be the catalyst for whatever winds up happening to Saul — and from this vantage point, it isn’t looking good.
