The Real Reason Sony Sold Its Square Enix Shares

Last month, it was revealed that Sony was selling off all of its shares in Square Enix, causing a lot of concern among the PlayStation faithful.

Fortunately, it doesn't sound like there's any bad blood between the two companies, as Square Enix producer Shinji Hashimoto has spoken out on the sale, saying that it was all about helping Sony out.

"Back in 2001, Square Enix had financial problems and Sony bought our stocks," he explained at Thailand Comic-Con (via Mognet Central). "Now, the situation is reversed. Since then, we have had good support from our customers for our products, so Square Enix is back on its legs.

"But Sony has declined," Hashimoto added. "The presidents of both companies had negotiation and resulted as everyone knew. We did not have argument. Since Sony once helped us, it was time we helped Sony back."

Square has both Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III in development. Hopefully we'll hear more about one (if not both) of the games at E3.
