Gay Nintendo Characters Celebrate the Company’s Promise of Equality on Last Week Tonight

Say what you will about homosexuality, Nintendo, and life in general. We're all gay in some way or another, so give it up and celebrate the loves of classic Nintendo couples like Mario and Link with John Oliver on his new HBO show.

You might remember Oliver from The Daily Show where he was Senior British Corespondent and hosted over the summer during Jon Stewart's break for a film project. He's landed himself a new show called Last Week Tonight with Jon Oliver and offers up a gay cheat code for those upset by Nintendo's lack of same-sex relationships in Tomodachi Life.

Ryan Bates was not happy about Nintendo's decision and Nick played devil's advocate for the publisher of games like Mario Kart 8 (read our review here), but this may be your last chance to weigh in on the issue as we move past it. Should the company even bother making a Tomodachi Life 2 with same-sex relationships? Would that make the situation any better?

I've been impressed with Nintendo's dedication to featuring strong, playable female characters in their games. In Super Mario 3D World on Wii U for example, players don't jump on Goombas to save Princess Peach. They jump on Goombas as Princess Peach! At least they've apologized and promised a more progressive stance in the future.
