DICE Talks Improvements to Mirror’s Edge Combat in Reboot

While the new Mirror's Edge appeared briefly at the Electronic Arts E3 2014 press conference (in the video above), we were left wanting for more details about the game's open-world though we did get to see the main character, Faith, take down some enemies from the first-person perspective.

Still, DICE has remained largely silent about the game until a recent interview with CVG where General Manager Karl Magnus Troedsson spoke to the improvements made to the game's combat which many critics lambasted as slow, cumbersome, and not all that fun.

"What I can say is that if the last game focussed[sic] on first-person movement, it was definitely shown in the movie here that the DICE team will be focussing on first-person combat as well, to really nail and refine that," Troedsson said.

In all honesty, I'd rather the team not focus on combat at all. I'd rather they find inventive ways for Faith to avoid combat or maintain motion and speed through a takedown, not unlike Ubisoft did with Assassin's Creed III's running assassinations. Even in the E3 video shown Faith's jumping and kicking seem a little jerky, but that could be a result of the dedicated FPS camera work that DICE has become known for.

"Fans of the game will just have to wait and see until we talk more about the actual game is and the vital mechanics of it. We've shown the combat and movement now, but there's so much more to talk about," Troedsson explained. "What I can say is, this is not just going to be the same game as the last one. We're building Faith for a new generation."

The new Mirror's Edge is slated for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC though it remains without a solid release date.
