Naughty Dog Wants Uncharted 4 to Be a “Light-Hearted Romp”

When Uncharted 4: A Thief's End was unveiled at E3 earlier this year with a dark and foreboding announcement trailer, many fans of the franchise feared that Nathan Drake's next adventure might be abandoning the pulpy, light-hearted style of the original trilogy.

Not only that but The Last of Us leads Bruce Straley and Neil Druckmann are heading up the project and they just came off making one of the most emotionally draining and dark games of 2013. Suffice it to say, there's definitely been reason to believe Uncharted 4 would be a much darker tale.

However, it appears that this won't be the case, as the studio plans to retain the fun and light-hearted feel of the prior games in the series. "Uncharted is a completely different franchise, and appeals to its audience for completely different reasons," Naughty Dog's Evan Wells told Eurogamer.

"I don't think The Last of Us marks a new direction in tone that all of our future games are going to take on. We'd alienate a lot of our Uncharted fans. We want to keep it a light-hearted romp. I think from a technical standpoint we've learned some things from The Last of Us that will feed into Uncharted – in fact, it strengthens our desire to keep them distinct."

Are you glad to hear A Thief's End will once again showcase more of Naughty Dog's happy-go-lucky side?
