OpenAI Unveils ChatGPT 5.1: Key Changes & Features

OpenAI recently launched ChatGPT 5.1, the latest version of its popular AI model, and it’s loaded with exciting upgrades. The mini update will reportedly make ChatGPT “smarter” and “more conversational,” ensuring a smoother user experience. In the words of CEO Sam Altman, it is “a nice upgrade”, as it comes with new communication styles and improved instruction-following abilities.

Here’s what ChatGPT 5.1 brings to your table

ChatGPT-5.1 is now available in two versions: Instant and Thinking. GPT-5.1 Instant, which OpenAI believes will be its most-used model, is designed for everyday use.

As described by the AI company, GPT-5.1 Instant is “warmer, more intelligent, and better at following instructions.” OpenAI claimed in a recent blog that users are surprised by its “playfulness,” which makes conversations feel natural and engaging. Moreover, GPT-5.1 Instant holds the potential of becoming the go-to model for most users, considering its suitability for daily tasks and chats.

On the other hand, OpenAI’s GPT-5.1 Thinking model will prove useful for complex tasks, offering clearer and faster responses. The optimized version saves tokens on simple questions and gives more detailed, definite, and jargon-free answers for challenging prompts. The Thinking mode, too, is “warmer and more empathetic,” making it easier to use and comprehend.

Additionally, the ChatGPT-5.1 models come bearing impressive new customisation options. Users can now tweak the chatbot’s tone and style according to their liking. Moreover, the upgraded version offers new conversation styles — Professional, Candid, and Quirky — besides the existing ones: Friendly, Efficient, and Default.

Available in both the Instant and Thinking models, the upgraded features are the outcome of OpenAI’s ongoing experimentation to allow more precise control over ChatGPT’s personality, apart from the preset modes.

OpenAI suggested that GPT-5.1 is part of a much bigger change towards a more personalized experience with ChatGPT. “Today’s GPT‑5.1 updates and new customization options are a step toward a ChatGPT that feels like it fits you—smarter, more enjoyable to talk to, and more adaptable to your preferences. Going forward, we’ll continue improving along these dimensions—there’s much more to come”, OpenAI stated.

Meanwhile, this new update comes amidst its legal tussle against The New York Times, whose lawsuit alleges OpenAI used its copyrighted content to train and enhance ChatGPT’s efficiency.
