We are now only two short days away from the release of
Prey. Bethesda and Arkane Studios are bringing us a new chapter of a brand new story set in space.
Their new first-person shooter will launch on PS4, Xbox One and PC. If you're still making your last-minute decisions about the game, or if you already have and want to know if you were right, here's everything you need to know about
Everything You Need To Know About Prey
Not The Same Team As Dishonored 2
More than that, the teams working on each games are actually different. After the development of
Dishonored, the team at Arkane Studios split off into two teams, one to develop Dishonored 2, and the other to develop Prey. The latter was developed by Arkane Studios – Austin.
It\'s Not Related To The Original Prey
Those looking for a true sequel or successor to the original
Prey, might be slightly disappointed. This is almost an entirely new style of game with few tangible connections to the original Prey. These connections are mostly all surface-level: the game is set in space where you fight off aliens. Beyond that, this is essentially a new IP.
You Can Turn Yourself Into Inanimate Objects
A fourth option could be
Prey’s most noteworthy ability: Mimc Matter. You have to unlock this ability after a few hours into the game, but it allows you to turn into another object in the environment. rn rnYou can use this ability as stealth, avoiding enemies who may be walking past, or you can use it to turn into a smaller object and fit through smaller openings, such as a gap in a security window.
You Can Play As A Male Or Female
Morgan Yu can be either a male or a female. You make this decision at the start of the game. Unlike
Dishonored 2, these characters have access to all the same weapons and abilities. rn rnLead designer Ricardo Bare confirmed via Reddit that some subtle plot points and lines of dialogue are changed depending on what gender you choose, but nothing too substantial. It seems entirely an aesthetic choice.
No New Game Plus At Launch
On the subject of unlocking abilities, you will not be able to restart the game upon completion with all of those abilities unlocked.
Prey developers confirmed that it will not come with New Game Plus at launch. rn rnLike Dishonored 2, this feature may be added after the game’s launch. Kath confirmed via Reddit that they can’t speak publicly about New Game Plus, DLC or any other post-launch plans at the moment.
Prey Your Way
A similar aspect with
Dishonored 2 is Prey’s “play your way” formula of gameplay. In Dishonored 2, this referred to the ability to be either stealthy or overt, lethal or non-lethal, but in Prey, this means you can approach almost every task in at least two different ways. rn rnFor instance, if you come to a door that requires a key-card or code, you can do one of three things: you can search the surrounding areas for the code or key card, you can try to hack your way through the door, or you can scan the environment for alternate paths, such as a ceiling grate or maintenance shaft.
No Early Review Copies, And No PC Demo
Being a Bethesda-published title,
Prey falls under Bethesda’s policy on early review copies, meaning there won’t be any. While this policy has gone off without a hitch on some occasions ( DOOM), it has also seen its downsides ( Dishonored 2). rn rnThese fears were exacerbated by the fact that Arkane Studios released a free demo for Prey, but only on Xbox One and PS4, leading many people to speculate that we’re in for another rough PC launch. rn rnHowever, the lead technical engineer for Prey has assured everyone that Arkane Studios Austin develops primarily on PC, and they’ve “done a lot of testing with many outside groups to make sure our performances is what we want it to be on various hardware” adding that players “will be pleased with how Prey looks/runs on PC.” rn rnIt’s worth noting, too, that Prey and Dishonored 2 run on entirely different engines.
What\'s It About?
You play as Morgan Yu, a scientist who gets called aboard an international space station called the Talos 1, but something goes terribly wrong and aliens start to run amok.
rn rnYou then have to make sure that none of these aliens make it back to earth. With the primary missions being to exterminate all potential invaders, Morgan Yu’s calendar is filled.
It Might Not Need New Game Plus
But, even though
Prey won’t have New Game Plus at launch, it might not need it at all. You play the game aboard Talos 1. It’s essentially a giant open-world-esque sandbox, and Arkane Studios has insured that the player will be able to backtrack all the way to the beginning area at any time. rn rnNew Game Plus is usually more valuable in linear games, when you’re cut off from an area you’ve previously visited, so you can’t go back and use your new abilities. This isn’t the case with Prey.
The Game Can Take More Than 30 Hours to Complete
For those wondering about bang-for-your-buck,
Prey seems to have a pretty good ratio. While confirming that typical playthroughs last anywhere from 16-24 hours, Ricardo Bare of Arkane Studios also reported that some playthroughs by developers have taken more than 30 total hours.
