Players Are Transforming into WoW: Legion’s Evil Antagonist with a New Easter Egg

Two weeks ago the Tomb of Sargeras raid was added to World of Warcraft. With it nine new boss encounters, a whole tier of loot, and a heavy helping of fresh challenge was introduced to the game.

Within hours the raid was completed on Normal and Heroic. At the time of the writing of this article, the hardcore European progression guild Method is on the final boss on Mythic difficulty.

The release of Tomb of Sargeras appeared normal, like the dozens of other times similar large-scale raids have been added to World of Warcraft to the past. However, this last weekend an interesting easter egg was found in the dungeon.

The easter egg is centered around a set of runes that are scattered around the several sections of the raid dungeon. Upon collecting all of them, the player is transformed into none other than Gul’dan, the primary antagonist of Legion.

Appearing as Gul’dan, the player can cast three abilities, consisting of the following:

  • Fell Efflux (15s cooldown) – A beam is sent out in front of Gul’dan that deals high damage per second.
  • Fel Scythe (2s cooldown) – Hits enemies in front of Gul’dan for 8.5 million damage.
  • Liquid Hellfire (12s cooldown) – An AoE with a travel time that deals 2.4 million damage upon impact.

As cool as it is from a visual standpoint, the best part is the player who becomes Gul’dan can attack teammates. Yes, classical MMO griefing is now available in a raid environment.

For World of Warcraft players, this is one of the more interesting secrets that have been added to World of Warcraft. As an Orc Warlock, Gul’dan is one of the most iconic characters in the Warcraft universe, responsible for several awful events that players have had to work together to stop from effectively destroying the universe over the past few years.

Blizzard was careful not to make the easter egg available in Looking for Raid, not only because of how the raid is split in this mode, but how it could be used to create drama in random PUGs.

If you just so happen to play World of Warcraft, and have progressed far into Tomb of Sargeras in Normal or Heroic, you can check out our rune guide to enjoy this easter egg.
