crash team racing remaster rumored for game awards

Rumor: Crash Team Racing Remaster to Appear at the Game Awards

If you have enjoyed the recent rebound of Crash Bandicoot into the video game spotlight, there seems to be a good news on the horizon. Speculation has mounted this week that a Crash Team Racing remaster is underway, and a recent tweet showing fuzzy dice may be an indicator it will be revealed sooner than later.

Rumors have been popping up across Facebook fan pages of Crash Bandicoot about a potential revival in the last few days. The Crash Bandicoot PS4 page on Facebook, for example, posted a picture of a checkered flag.

While that doesn’t mean much, another development today seems to indicate there may be something to the speculation.

Playstation Access presenter and channel manager Hollie Bennett tweeted a picture of fuzzy orange dice that looked an awful lot like Crash Bandicoot’s fur color. A message above the dice read “Sliding into the Game Awards on 6/12…. – Anonymous”.

Additionally, Eurogamer seems to indicate that there is something to all of this with them noting that Activision (who now owns the rights to the series) may be officially revealing the title later this week.

A potential revival of CTR is likely based off the popularity of Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, a remaster of the first three Crash Bandicoot titles that was released last year. Game Revolution’s Jason Faulkner wrote in his reviewCrash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is a loving remaster of a series of fan-favorite games. If you need a dose of 32-bit nostalgia, or if you want to see where one of gaming’s iconic characters started you can’t go wrong here.”

Originally released for the PlayStation in 1999 and developed by Naughty Dog, Crash Team Racing followed the same formula as another popular racing game at the time Mario Kart 64. Power-ups, weapons, and other items could be used against opponents in a race to the finish line. It received high praise among release, scoring an 88 on Metacritic.

A sequel, Nitro Kart, came out in 2003 and was developed by Vicarious Visions. The most recent game in the series, Crash Tag Team Racing, was developed by Radical Entertainment and released in 2005.

This year’s Game Awards will be streaming across Twitch, YouTube, Mixer and other streaming services on December 6 starting at 5:30 PM Pacific. Will we see the orange marsupial there, perhaps?
