Nvidia CEO calls AMD Radeon 7 ‘lousy’, says RTX will ‘crush it’

In the latest clash of the GPU wars, the Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang has spoken out against the performance of AMD’s new Radeon 7 gaming card. Speaking to PCWorld after AMD’s announcement, Jen-Hsun called the Radeon 7 lousy, and commented that the Nvidia RTX will “crush it”.

The Radeon 7 is AMD’s new 7nm form of its second-generation Vega architecture, promising gaming performance on par with Nvidia’s RTX 2080. However, Jen-Hsun has since called the Radeon 7 lousy in comparison, believing that AMD’s technology can “barely keep up with the 2080” and refusing to acknowledge any significance in their 7nm card.

“The performance is lousy and there’s nothing new,” Jen-Hsun commented. ““No ray tracing, no AI. It’s 7nm with HBM memory that barely keeps up with a 2080. And if we turn on DLSS we’ll crush it. And if we turn on ray tracing we’ll crush it.”

In response to the comments made by Jen-Hsun, the AMD CEO Lisa Su reportedly rebuked “I would probably suggest that he hasn’t seen it yet.” While Jen-Hsun called the Radeon 7 lousy, the card is equipped with new technology including 16GB of high-bandwidth memory, putting it in a solid stance to challenge the Nvidia RTX 2080. Likewise, its $699 price is equivalent to the price of the Nvidia competitor.

These comments follow performance benchmark leaks that suggest Nvidia is in the production of a GTX 1180 range, equipped with all the abilities of a GTX 2080 except ray-tracing, potentially lacking RTCores. Nvidia is still in pole position in this arms race, with their GeForce RTX technology set to power more than 40 upcoming gaming laptop models.

On the other hand, AMD is the preference for console developers, powering both the Xbox One and the PS4. The AMD/Xbox partnership is in full swing for the next generation of consoles, likely to be integrated into the series of “Xbox Scarlett” boxes expected to come in 2020.
