I've actually had some time with the game pad and really enjoy it. Atop that the console is remarkably well-priced for a new console. The fact that "that iPad controller" and the system still cost less than an iPad and slightly more than a Vita is a testament to how much Nintendo wants to get these bad boys in houses.

Hopefully I win one from work they're giving away buttloads of electronics every week right now. Figurative buttloads, that is.

I hope you win one too Brett. Your kids would really enjoy playing with that thing too. Plus, the Miiverse is actually really well policed (at least as far as I've seen).

I wouldn't be surprised in the least if Nintendo were taking a loss on each of the consoles sold. There's a lot of tech in the controller and the console is still a solid piece of (current-gen) hardware.

They wouldn't be taking a loss, but at the same time i don't think they're making as much profit as they were with the wii.
The price to make the consoles will have gone down by early 2014, though, so Nintendo will be making a decent profit on every sale - and then the games they just announced will be released, and Nintendo will sell millions of consoles and buy Canada. All of Canada. With their 'petty cash' draw.

Still don't like the ipad thing. It just doesn't add enough to the gameplay to make me want it, especially if i break it and have to fork out the, what, $170 or something for a replacement?
The WiiU can do the equivalent of DX10.1 with smooth framerates and has all the Nintendo exclusives (maybe a non-shit metroid this time?), but that stupid tablet thing just won't let me enjoy it or be immersed. I played a bit of ZombiU at a mates house and every time i'd start to enjoy it and get immersed in the setting - CRACK, menu time.
I don't like it. I don't like it in theory and i don't like it in execution.

I'll buy a WiiU (used, from the US) if the Wind Waker remake can be played with a normal controller.
