Nintendo Reveals Best-Selling eShop Games of 2018

Nintendo has revealed the best-selling games on its eShop service in 2018, providing a rundown of the digital games released this year that have achieved the highest number of sales. Curiously, Nintendo included free-to-play games in its rundown, indicating that the list likely reflects the largest number of downloads rather than the most amount of revenue generated.

Fortnite has proven to be hugely successful on the Nintendo Switch, with it topping the list and beating out the likes of Fallout Shelter and Paladins. All three games are free-to-play, with Super Smash Bros Ultimate being the best-selling paid game on the list at number four. Considering that Smash Ultimate released in December, this is a very impressive feat for Nintnedo’s brawler.

Warframe and Arena of Valor charted in fifth and sixth place respectively, continuing to prove that free-to-play games were very popular on the Switch this year, while Minecraft came in seventh. The excellent indie game Hollow Knight also received plenty of downloads this year in eighth place, beating out both Super Mario Party and Celeste.

The full list can be viewed below:

Considering that previous Nintendo consoles revolved around the company’s first-party games, it’s heartening to see so many third-party games gain a lot of traction on the Switch. With the likes of Dead CellsGolf Story, and Darkest Dungeon also making appearances, it’s clear that there’s a big market for third-party and independent games on the portable console. Let’s hope we’ll see even more in 2019.
