Devil May Cry 5 | Can you play as Vergil?

Devil May Cry has always been about Dante but his twin brother Vergil has almost always played a major role as well. He was playable in both the Devil May Cry 3 and Devil May Cry 4 special editions as well as the the DLC in DmC Devil May Cry. It almost seems like a tradition at this point. So is Vergil playable in Devil May Cry 5? Keep in mind that there will be some huge spoilers in this article.

Can you play as Vergil in Devil May Cry 5?

Devil May Cry 5 | Can you play as Vergil?

Simply put, Vergil is not playable in Devil May Cry 5. The only playable characters are V, Dante, and Nero. Everyone else is just a non-playable cast member. Capcom has also not talked about making a special edition sometime in the future, nor is the game getting any DLC aside from the free Bloody Palace update coming in April. So the only way you’d be able to play as Vergil in Devil May Cry 5 would be if Capcom developed a special edition, which is something that has happened for the last three entries. Spoilers ahead.

But while you can’t play as Vergil in DMC5, doesn’t mean you don’t play as Vergil in some form. As it is revealed in the last act of the story, V is in fact Vergil. Well, he’s part of him at least. Vergil separated his human half from his demon half with the Yamato. And since V is Vergil’s human half, you do technically play as Vergil in V’s levels. Neither play similarly nor do they even look alike but they are the same person.

The theory that Capcom will make Vergil playable in a special edition one day isn’t too far fetched either since you do fight regular Vergil in the game. Similarly to Devil May Cry 3 and DmC Devil May Cry, Vergil is the final boss, meaning that there is some framework of him in the game somewhere. Devil May Cry 3 also had him as the final boss and then proceeded to make him playable in the special edition less than year later. DmC made the Vergil’s Downfall DLC available a few months after the game initially came out.

Again, Capcom said there would be no DLC but that doesn’t necessarily mean an updated re-release is off the table.
