Long-Term Changes in Store as Nintendo Names Iwata’s Successor

Nintendo has announced that Tatsumi Kimishima will succeed the late Satoru Iwata as company president.

In case you don't already know, Kimishima was the president of Nintendo of America back in 2002, where he retained that role until Reggie Fils-Aime took his position in 2006. He also spent time as CFO of The Pokémon Company. He will assume his new role as president of Nintendo on September 16

A number of other changes among the company's leadership will be happening on that day as well. Here's an overview of who's moving where:

  • Genyo Takeda – Technology Fellow
  • Shigeru Miyamoto – Creative Fellow
  • Shigeyuki Takahashi – General Manager, Finance, Administration Division Supervisor of General Affairs Division
  • Satoshi Yamato – General Manager, Marketing Division
  • Shinya Takahashi – General Manager, Entertainment Planning & Development Division

While Nintendo has confirmed that Kimishima will see out Iwata's vision as the company transitions to a new generation of gaming hardware and makes a push in the mobile space, the company also told Nikkei (via NintendoWorldReport) that the new president is also looking at a larger long-term strategy that will involve new projects that expand beyond the plan Iwata laid out before his passing.

Takeda also spoke to the outlet, noting that Nintendo is looking to future-proof its leadership system, making it clear there's more being done internally to redefine the way Nintendo works from a structural standpoint.

It's difficult to say right now what Kimishima's new role will ultimately mean for the future of the company and Nintendo fans like you and me. That said, be sure to let us know what you think of Nintendo's new leadership changes in the comments.
