2016’s Most Attractive Indie Game Has Been Delayed a Year

Remember Cuphead? You know, the run and gun platformer with hand-drawn visuals in the style of 1930's cartoons? Well, we were supposed to be playing it by now, but something happened.

For one reason or another, developer Studio MDHR has requested a delay for Cuphead. Originally aimed for this Summer, it is now scheduled for "Mid 2017", which has significantly impacted the indie roster for the rest of 2016. The official announcement post states:

Hey everyone, we wanted to finish our game 80 years after 1936 but it will now be 81.

Throughout this year we discussed reducing the scope to make a 2016 release, but we made the difficult decision to delay the launch in order to ship with our vision intact. We are happy to announce that Cuphead will be coming to Xbox One, Windows 10 and Steam in Mid-2017.

We are constantly humbled by your continued support. Love you all and can’t wait to get this to you. Without further ado, we will get back to work!

Cuphead has earned widespread attention for its mixture of classic platformer gameplay and beautiful art. In this sense, it's not too dissimilar from Ori and the Blind Forest, but both its content and visuals are much different. Cuphead has painted backgrounds, hand-drawn animations, and characters made in Photoshop. The process for crafting the game visually is the same as 1930's cartoons, with frame-rate being the only deviation.

It isn't entirely reliant on its graphics, though. Cuphead is mostly based around boss rush style gameplay, with an emphasis on intense sequences that require timely execution to survive. There isn't really anything like it in the modern era, which is part of the reason it earned accolades at E3.

We'll have to wait a bit longer to play the official release, but the extra development time should prove useful to making the game even better.
