Miyamoto Reflects on Retirement and The Future of Nintendo

Shigeru Miyamoto, who needs no introduction, has shared his thoughts on a number of recent activities, including his retirement and his new projects in Nintendo.

He is still surprised that his quotes on retirement last last year were overblown, but he appreciates the kindness behind the nerd-rage reactions that he should not (perhaps ever) retire:

I have no intention to retire at all. I'm not old enough to think about retirement right now. But everyone has to retire at some point. I wanted to make clear that we are preparing for that.

The subject of retirement, however, has instilled in him a slight jealousy toward his own legacy:

I become rather jealous [of my characters] because we have to pass away and they can just go on. But it's a good thing. The team behind Super Mario 3D Land were once kids that loved the original.

In the immediate future, Miyamoto will likely not translate the HD capabilities of the Wii U into photorealistic titles:

I'm not saying that I am particularly bad at making very photo-realistic video games. But when it comes to the realistic games, you have to create something familiar… I want to make something really different.

On that front, he will share his incredible expertise in the production of Pikmin 3, Luigi Mansion 2, and a yet undisclosed oriignal title. Whatever it is, we can't wait to see what he has up his sleeve in when he is very much still in his prime.
