Valve Expresses Its Disdain for Windows 8 (Again), Unveils Gaming Headset Plans

There's no doubt that Apple has shown up Microsoft on a number of occasions over the past several years, but Valve's Gabe Newell is convinced that emulating the competition's strategy will ultimately backfire on the Big M. The way Newell sees it, Windows 8 brings forth a much more controlled environment that will end up undermining the efforts of creative platforms like Steam.

Speaking to the NY Times, Newell explained: “We would say to Microsoft, we understand all these frustrations about the challenges to your business. But trying to copy Apple will accelerate, not slow, Microsoft’s decline.”

This quote comes coupled with Valve's announcement that they're currently working on a gaming headset that they hope will “let players lose themselves inside a virtual reality and, eventually, blend games with their views of the physical world.” Valve hasn't decided how to go about moving forward with this technology quite yet, but is thrilled with the possibilities it offers.

What do you think? Are gaming headsets really the way of the future? Is Microsoft's closed platform approach with Windows 8 a terrible idea? Sound off in the comments below.
