Motorola Loses Patent Dispute With Microsoft, Xbox 360s Will Not Be Banned

The case between Motorola and Microsoft has finally come to a close (sort of) as a US judge has ruled against the banning of Xbox 360s in America and Germany.

According to the BBC, Judge James Robart deemed the Xbox 360 component a ‘Frand’-type innovation, which means that since it's a necessary component in the industry, no one can claim complete ownership of the tech.

For those that need a refresher on the case, Motorola was looking to block sales of the Xbox 360 in both America and Germany, and receive $4 billion a year for the company's use of Motorola connectivity and video-coding patents.

It looks like the two companies are still working out a fair rate for use of the patents, but at this point, Microsoft can finally rest easy.
