New Overwatch Workshop mode lets players create own tools, game modes, and more

Even though it’s been out for a few years now, the Overwatch team over at Blizzard continues to make improvements to the core game. And a big one is on the way that promises a lot of customization options called “The Workshop.” This Overwatch Workshop lets fans can use tools to create their own special rules – and even make tweaks to heroes.

In a new video posted on the Overwatch YouTube channel, game director Jeff Kaplan announced that a trailblazing mode is in the works. With it, players can let their creative juices flow, since they’ll be able to create their own custom modes. Kaplan calls it a “power user” feature, one that will be best left to those that truly understand Overwatch. That said, others can give it a shot, at the very least.

The official blog post for Overwatch breaks down all that you can do within the game, which includes creating a “floor is lava” style setup.

“Create games in ways previously unimaginable with the Workshop! The Workshop is a simplified game scripting system that expands the customization features available in the Game Browser. Within the Workshop, you’ll create a Script to add Rules and unique play Conditions on top of the established Overwatch game modes you already know and love. Rules can do many things, like change how a hero’s movement and abilities work, modify how players are damaged or healed, or even display text under certain circumstances,” the team explains in the post.

There’s no word on when the mode will launch within the game. However, it’s currently testing in the PTR, or Public Test Realm. So if you have that set up, jump on in. Kaplan’s video post is below, which you might want to do if you’ve been looking for something new to do within the game.
