PS5 Dualshock 5 Patent

PS5 DualShock 5 probably won’t have a light bar

The PS5 DualShock 5 controller probably won’t have a light bar — at least if recent patent documents are to be believed. As companies are wont to do, Sony has filed detailed drawings with a patent in Japan for a new controller. We can’t say for sure if it will be for the PlayStation 5 console, but I’d wager that the odds are pretty good.

The patent in question (recently highlighted by ResetEra) shows drawings of what may be the PS5 DualShock controller from every perspective. Right off the bat, there are some stark differences between this patent and the DualShock 4 controller, the most notable of which is the absence of the light bar. The lighr bar, if you’re unaware, is exactly what it says on the tin: a bar on the controller that lights up and can react to in-game events if a developer so chooses to program them in.

Previously, some information indicated that the PS5 DualShock 5 controller would have online functionality, potentially allowing it to be used for cloud gaming all on its own. Although there won’t be a light bar, this (in tandem with other features) may well make for a marked improvement for this upcoming next-gen console.

The patent shows a potential PS5 DualShock controller with the following notable changes:

  • A USB port on top (where the lightbar used to be)
  • Differently-shaped triggers
  • Smaller analog sticks

Unfortunately, the patent only has a few drawings and they’re not exactly explained in detail, leaving us with a lot of guesswork. We can’t say for sure if this is going to be the PS5 DualShock 5; if it is, it looks like it’s going to be just as many big changes to the PlayStation experience as the DualShock 4 did all those years ago.
