You'll get the most bang for your buck by participating in the Daily Gauntlet, Exhibition and Ladder racing events.
All motorcycle upgrades will help you win the races – engine upgrades will make you go faster, while control and grip upgrades (such as tires, suspension, etc) will help you corner harder and exit turns more quickly.
Plat as many Daily Gauntlet races as you can because these races make sure to outfit with you with a solid enough bike with the type of stats needed to compete in them.
Try to upgrade you engine as much as possible.
