Xbox One Will Do “Nothing” Without Mandatory Day One Update

Microsoft has confirmed that Xbox One will require a mandatory update on day one. In fact, you won't be able to do much of anything on the console—yes, that includes playing disc-based games—without first connecting to the internet and updating the hardware.

Speaking to Engadget, senior director of product management Albert Penello confirmed that downloading a patch on launch day will be a requirement for Xbox One owners. As far as what can be done without the update? "Nothing. You need the day one update," Penello said.

"A lot of the apps come with the day one update because they wouldn't have even been done," he continued. "You're gonna need to take this update. It's not gonna be really an optional thing. Functionally, you will be able to do very little without taking the day one update."

It's a real shame consoles aren't the simple plug in and play machines of yesteryear. Oh well, that's just the price one must pay for evolving technology, I guess.
