Pilots make a difference in gameplay. It can be distracting sometimes.
Take out the largest opponents first because their projectiles tend to extend the furthest.
Upgrading guns is actually just a rental. You get a couple of hours or so with the beefed up plane, so make the most of the upgrade while it lasts, and don't pay for an upgrade unless you plan to play for a bit immediately thereafter.
When you lift your finger from the screen during play, you can no longer directly control your plane but your guns will begin charging.
You can use charged shots to take down large foes and to get rid of swarms of the smaller guys.
