Sony Selling PC Division, Splitting Off TV Business, Laying Off 5,000 Employees

Sony's third-quarter financials are in, and thanks to the launch of PlayStation 4, its gaming division has been doing quite well.

Sony's game business raked in 442 billion yen ($4.2 billion), a whopping 64 percent increase over last year's 268.5 billion yen figure. Thanks to Sony's success in this department, the company as a whole saw profits of 27 billion yen ($257 million). This is a huge improvement from last year's 10.8 billion yen ($106 million) in losses.

As far as Sony's other divisions go, the company is in the process of selling off its Vaio PC division to Japan Industrial Partners, while it plans to focus more on its smartphone and tablet products from here on out. In addition, Sony is splitting off its TV division into a wholly-owned subsidiary that is dedicated to 4K. Sadly, all of these changes will result in 5,000 layoffs at the company.
