Microsoft Reveals DirectX 12, Promises to Boost Xbox One Performance

Today at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Microsoft unveiled DirectX 12, its new graphics API.

According to the company, Xbox One and Windows gamers alike will reap the benefits of this new, visual-boosting tech. "Xbox One games will see improved performance and we’ll bring the same API to all Microsoft platforms," Microsoft's Anuj Gosalia said during the company's GDC panel (via IGN).

Epic Games' Tim Sweeny also spoke a bit about DirectX 12, confirming that "Epic will be working closely with NVIDIA and Microsoft to create a world-class implementation of DX12 in Unreal Engine 4." He then went on to praise the technology, saying, "DirectX 12 is a great step forward, exposing low-level hardware functionality through an industry standard API to give developers more control and efficiency than ever before."

While DirectX 12 won't support Windows XP, Microsoft refused to confirm whether or not the same applies to Windows 7. Expect to find out more in the coming months as Microsoft plans to preview DX12 later this year.
