Elon Musk has revealed his new online encyclopedia, Grokipedia, to the public, and it has already stirred some controversy for its content. The new website is supposedly intended to rival the famous online information source Wikipedia, but it has been alleged that the initial version of Musk’s new site, Grokipedia, has many pages copied directly from its rival. Some sources have claimed that the initial pages of Grokipedia bear remarkable similarities to Wikipedia, which currently houses the most amount of information on most topics.
Here’s what’s currently known about the allegations made about Musk’s new Grokipedia and its similarities to content hosted originally on Wikipedia.
Elon Musk’s Grokipedia reportedly has pages from Wikipedia
Elon Musk announced Grokipedia as a rival to Wikipedia. But it has been alleged that the new Grokipedia, which claims to have 885,279 live articles, has some that are direct copies of Wikipedia articles.
The Verge reported soon after the launch of the site that some articles are directly pulled from the information-rich Wikipedia. Pages for topics like the MacBook Air, PlayStation 5, and Lincoln Mark VIII even have a disclaimer. The disclaimer reads, “The content is adapted from Wikipedia, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 4.0 License.” The wording is also quite similar to Wikipedia, making it possibly an AI-adapted version of the existing content.
However, there are also some pages that are drastically different, like the one on climate change. The stance of Grokipedia is quite visible in such entries.
However, when Musk announced the new encyclopedia, he claimed that it would be better than Wikipedia. “We are building Grokipedia @xAI. Will be a massive improvement over Wikipedia. Frankly, it is a necessary step towards the xAI goal of understanding the Universe,” Musk had posted, responding to a user calling Wikipedia “hopelessly biased” and “left-wing.”
