Tom Brady has stepped into a career of trading card collecting, but his new business venture was hit by a costly theft. Nearly $10,000 worth of Pokémon and baseball cards were reportedly stolen from the CardVault by Tom Brady store in New York City. Unfortunately, this has put the NFL legend’s name in the headlines for a very different kind of loss.
Collectible Pokémon cards stolen from Tom Brady’s store
The incident with the Pokémon cards at the Tom Brady store CardVault in SoHo happened on the morning of October 20 at 11:40 AM.
According to the New York Police Department, a man entered the shop and selected high-value collectible cards. The suspect first tried to complete the purchase at the register using a credit card. However, the transaction was declined. Instead of leaving his items behind, he started to enter manual prompts into the contact payment terminal. (via ABC News)
This happened without the employee’s knowledge and ended up with him bypassing the declined transaction. The employee thought that the payment had gone through. This is how the man walked out of the store with roughly $9,710 worth of cards.
No one was injured during the incident, but the police are treating it as a case of grand larceny. They have also released surveillance images and videos of the suspect, who was seen wearing black clothes and a Yankees cap, also carrying a multicolored bag.
As per the latest update from the NYPD, no arrests have been made, but the Financial Crimes Task Force is conducting an investigation. Furthermore, the specific Pokémon and baseball cards taken from Tom Brady’s store haven’t been announced either.
It was reported earlier this year that Brady has acquired a 50% stake in CardVault. It is a high-end card retailer with multiple stores across the United States. The NFL champion rose in the trading card world in recent years as both a collector and an investor.
