Discord Age Checks Trigger Users To Leave Platform for Rival

If you are one of the many Discord users looking to move to a different platform, you might want to join fellow ex-Discord users and sign up on TeamSpeak. With the news of Discord’s new age check policy rolling out, many users have already abandoned the platform in favour of TeamSpeak.

Discord users are leaving the platform due to age check feature

On February 9, Discord updated its blog to confirm that starting early March, its new Teen by default settings will be active globally. Per this new system, users will have an age-appropriate experience. Unless a user confirms they are an adult, they will be subject to limitations on sensitive content and communication tools. They will also not have access to restricted spaces.

The prominent messaging app will include new safety settings and age-assurance tools. Facial age estimation and government ID verification through third-party vendors will be used to implement these age-based restrictions. Furthermore, the new system will apply to both existing and new users. It wasn’t long before Discord users began seeking alternatives to ensure a seamless experience.

Many of these users turned to the platform’s rival, TeamSpeak. On February 14, TeamSpeak’s official X account claimed that they were seeing an increase in sign-ups. TeamSpeak wrote, “With the incredible surge of new users joining TeamSpeak and subscribing to communities, current hosting capacity has been reached in many regions, especially in the United States. We’re working on expanding availability across additional regions. Thank you for your patience as we scale to meet the growing demand!”

For those unversed, TeamSpeak is not a new platform. On the contrary, it is even older than Discord. The voice-over-IP platform, launched in 2001, supports low-latency voice calls. It is popular among online gaming communities and esports teams. Unlike Discord, this platform does not support text channels, video, and other such integrated tools. It is regaining popularity due to changes to Discord’s age-related policies.
