What If? Episode 2 has been deployed to Disney Plus subscribers’ feeds, giving viewers another timeline-altering scenario to ponder on. This is the GameRevolution review. Warning: Spoilers ahead!

What If? Episode 2 Review: “A bittersweet farewell to Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa”

what if episode 2 review

What If? Episode 2 is a well-paced space trip, with plenty of familiar faces and Easter eggs that fans of the MCU will love. It’s a bittersweet farewell to Chadwick Boseman that explores an interesting new path for T’Challa.

In the second episode of What If? we see T’Challa accidentally abducted instead of Peter Quill. This leads him to become the Ravager Star-Lord. Unlike Peter Quill’s version, T’Challa is famous for his stealing from the powerful and giving to the powerless.

Achievements of T’Challa’s Star-Lord include saving the universe from Thanos. He defeated the Mad Titan by talking him out of the genocide idea. There are other fun nods to the MCU timeline like Drax appearing for a selfie with Star-Lord, noting how his wife and child will look forward to seeing the photo (since they haven’t died in this universe).

With Thanos on Star-Lord’s side now, the main enemy of the episode is the Collector, who is armed with a variety of weapons including a Dark Elf dagger and Hela’s helm. Yondu and T’Challa team up to defeat the villain with the help of Nebula, Thanos, and the other Ravagers.

The battle against the Collector is cool, though the combat scenes are a downgrade on what we saw from Captain Carter in the debut. There could have been more variety in the Collector’s combat style, as he has many weapon at his disposal. There’s even Captain America’s shield spotted in his portable armory!

As we learned from What If? Episode 1, it really feels like this series is made for those who have already watched the MCU movies. Watching What If? without that existing knowledge could be jarring, especially with the breakneck pace that events fly by at.

While What If? Episode 2 isn’t a must-watch for those looking to stay updated on canonical events, it’s still a fun time that diehard fans should invest 30 minutes into.

What If? Episode 2 ending explained

At the end of What If? Episode 2, Nebula has secured the Embers of Genesis and makes her escape. Thanos remains behind to fight the Black Order, who are working for the Collector. With the Mad Titan about to lose, Nebula returns to save her father.

Meanwhile, T’Challa fights the Collector with the help of Yondu. Eventually defeated, the Collected is left to his fate as his entire collection of creatures is released from their cages.

T’Challa then visits Wakanda and meets with his father. It appears to be a very happy ending until the story changes focus to Peter Quill. Working at a Dairy Queen, Peter Quill is cleaning up as the store is closing. However, Ego visits him and the Watcher hints at how this will doom this universe.

The episode ends with a written dedication to Chadwick Boseman. It’s a bittersweet goodbye to the man who gave MCU fans Black Panther and this iteration of Star-Lord. I know many fans, family, and friends will find this installment a difficult watch, but it’s good to hear the man’s voice paired with his animated self.
