Real Boxing Preview

Get real!

The absence of a boxing title on the PlayStation Vita, that isn't a port like Fight Night Round 3, is nigh-blasphemy. The addition of a second analog stick for the Vita would seem like it would be the perfect platform for Fight Night controls, but Electronic Arts seems to be focused on their next-gen Ignite engine. So steps Real Boxing into the squared circle to satisfy our need for fisticuffs.

Some mobile gamers might know Real Boxing as a title available on Android and iOS for €4.99, so the main question they ask is why to even bother purchasing it for Vita at twice the price. The central differences are that the combination of the D-pad, face buttons, and analog sticks allow for fuller control of the boxer around the ring. The controls for the right analog stick borrows from Fight Night by assigning left and right strikes to specific directional pushes. Pressing down the L button allows for body modifiers for punches, and pushing the proper buttons with the right timing initiates the new combo system.

Additionally, the Vita version of Real Boxing includes a new multiplayer system coupled with leaderboards, several new arenas, better enemy AI, and Near integration. The graphics based off Unreal Engine 3 have been upgraded with improved modeling and shaders. And then of course you don't have to deal with any in-app purchases.

In-ring fighting is fairly straightforward, with your chosen character getting close to throw strikes of every variety and evading by swaying at the right time or simply stepping back. Throwing too many punches in a row will drain the stamina bar quickly, so it's necessary to weave in and out. Boxers can customize their clothes, perks, stamina, strength, and speed by playing three mini-games that test your timing and by spending cash on upgrades. Eventually, your created boxer will rise through career mode from the Rooster's Tournament and become a Boxing Legend.

Real Boxing releases on August 28th on PlayStation Vita.
