Age of Empires Definitive Edition Guide: How to Advance to Iron Age Quickly

Age of Empires Definitive Edition is out right now on PC, giving players the chance to recapture (or capture for the first time) the intense action of this groundbreaking strategy game that released just 20 years ago. One of the most defining features of AOE Definitive Edition is its ability to advance through four distinct technological ages in history.

Those four Age of Empires Definitive Edition ages are stone age, tool age, bronze age, and iron age in that respective order. Advancing through these ages as fast as humanly possible should be one of your main goals in just about every match you participate in, whether it’s online or offline. Let’s show you how to do this the fastest.

Age of Empires Definitive Edition: How to Advance to Iron Age Quickly

Advancing through the four ages in Age of Empires Definitive Edition can be pretty tough at first, as you are overwhelmed with all of the information and various people/buildings you can create. However, you will quickly discover that one of the primary goals you should always have is advancing to the Iron Age as fast as possible.

This is because each age in AOE Definitive Edition has a huge advantage over the previous one(s) with new troops, buildings, and ways to win. Even the simple jump from Stone Age to Tool Age is great enough that a Stone Age player will most likely lose in a fight. Being one of the first to reach the Iron Age in a match gives you an advantage that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

But how do you advance to the Iron Age quickly in Age of Empires Definitive Edition? It’s pretty simple actually. AOE Definitive Edition is all about conserving resources as much as possible. From the start, you will want to designate as many workers as you can to gathering food. We also recommend building storehouses like the Granary and ships that allow you to save up food faster.

Food is the bread and butter literally to advancing through the ages. You need 500 to advance to the Tool Age, 800 food to get to the Bronze Age, and 1000 food and also 800 gold to reach the coveted Iron Age. Getting the 1000 food is easy enough if you start on the right foot, but gold can be harder in Age of Empires Definitive Edition.

We recommend mining the gold mines with Villagers as fast as possible and taking advantage of trading with other players. This will get you the necessary gold to reach the Iron Age in Age of Empires Definitive Edition and win the game. Good luck!
