information, are things that I am not positive about. Typically these are the 
actions that I, myself, completed that immediately resulted in the unlockable 
being received; however, I'm not sure if what I did is the only way, nor the 
easiest way, to unlock it.

2> GAME SUMMARY

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games is, at heart, a suite of Olympic-themed 
minigames. The games are loosely held together by a few game-wide objectives 
and Circuits in which the player competes for points from event-to-event, with 
the most points winning the gold medal at the end of the Circuit. The game also 
has several unlockables for achievements. These unlockables include emblems of 
recognition, extra events, extra circuits and extra characters.

The game also functions as a major promotional tool for the upcoming Olympics 
in Beijing, China. The Olympic logo is used throughout, and the game is 
officially licensed by the IOC.

It has been rumored that there are unlockable characters; however, there has

Event: 100m
Type: Race (running)

How To Unlock: Initially Available
Description: The standard 100m race; reach the finish line before everyone 
else.
How To Play: Essentially, run as fast as you can. There's no strategy or 
stamina in this event, so just shake the controllers until your arms fall off.
Tips: The magnitude of your gestures don't affect your speed; only the 
frequency. So, basically the most efficient, effective method is to do a 
virtual drumroll with the controller and nunchuk.

Event: 400m
Type: Race (running)
Number of Players (concurrently): 1-4 human, 1-7 computer (8 max)
How To Unlock: Unlock Comet Circuit (Medal in Planet Circuit)*
Description: This is a longer foot race that brings in the aspect of stamina 
into the gameplay.
How To Play: Run while keeping a close eye on your stamina. To regain stamina, 
stop running (your character will keep running, but stop moving the 
controller). Your stamina will only start to run out when you start running in 
the red area of your meter at the top left. During the last 100m, hold down A 
to spring and use the rest of your stamina.
Tips: The key to this event is to carefully balance your running speed at the 
top of the blue area. This, though, is a lot harder than it sounds. With 
practice, though, you can master is. Balance your speed on the top of the blue 
until the final 100m, then you should have enough stamina to sprint the last 
part. Don't worry about other competitors passing you; chances are they'll tire 
out in the end.

Event: 4x100m Relay
Type: Race (running, relay)
Number of Players (concurrently): 1-4 human, 1-7 computer (8 max)
How To Unlock: Unlock Moonlight Circuit (Medal in Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury and 
Venus circuits).
Description: The standard 100m dash, but with a relay function added in.
How To Play: From the start, it's a standard 100m race. Towards the end of a 
stretch, though, your speed will lock and you'll need to handle the handoff. 
Press B to start your partner running, then swing the WiiMote down to execute 
the handoff. Run another 100m, repeat, run another 100m, repeat, finish the 
race.
Tips: Press B fairly shortly after your speed gets locked, and execute the 
handoff a good bit before you actually reach your partner; I've never actually 
found a 'too early'. You're much more likely to handoff too late than too 
early, so lean on the early side. As far as running, see the tips for 100m.

Event: 110m Hurdles
Type: Race (running)
Number of Players (concurrently): 1-4 human, 1-7 computer (8 max)
How To Unlock: Initially Available
Description: The standard 100m, but with hurdles.
How To Play: Running is identical to the 100m race. To jump the hurdles, press 
B shortly before you reach each one.
Tips: This event is all about the hurdles - if you successfully jump them, your 
running speed won't matter as much. Jumping should be slightly before you reach 
the hurdle itself; with practice you'll master the timing. One reader suggests
intentionally NOT using the nunchuk - I haven't tried this, but if you're
having difficulty, it may be worth a try.

How To Unlock: Unlock Meteorite Circuit (Medal in Sunlight Circuit)*
Description: A combination of hurdles and 400m; you have to both jump hurdles 
and monitor your stamina.
How To Play: Running and stamina work just like in the 400m, and jumping 
hurdles works just like in the 110m Hurdles.
Tips: The stamina tips included above apply here too; try to balance your speed 
at the top of the blue on your speed meter in the top left. Again, one reader
suggests intentionally NOT using the nunchuk - I haven't tried this, but if
you're having difficulty, it may be worth a try.

Event: Long Jump
Type: Performance (measurement)
Number of Players (concurrently): 1
How To Unlock: Initially Available
Description: Jump as far as you can. Or as "long" as you can, so to speak.
How To Play: When your turn is up, run with the controllers the standard way. 
Once your speed is locked, jerk the controller upward as close to the white 
foul line as possible.
Tips: Running at max speed is important; but the more crucial aspect of this 
event is the jump itself. The motion is very delicate - jerking very hard at 
all will result in an over jump and a very short jump; but barely moving will 
result in a bad jump as well. The only way to master the jump itself is 
practice, practice, practice. You'll get the hang of it.

Event: Triple Jump
Type: Performance (measurement)
Number of Players (concurrently): 1
How To Unlock: Initially Available
Description: The same as the long jump, but there's three jumps one after the 
other (the first is called the 'Hop', the second the 'Step' and the third the 
'Jump').
How To Play: Run with the controllers as usually, then hop (by jerking up on 
the controller) the first time as you reach the foul line. Then, right as you 
hit the ground, jerk up on the nunchuk to accomplish the step. Then, again, 
right as you reach the ground after the step, jerk up on the controller again 
for the final jump.
Tips: Like the long jump, this is entirely dependent on how well you jerk the 
controller. Too hard or too soft will doom you, and the happy medium is very 
small. With practice, though, you'll get it. In my experience, the step and 
jump are much less sensitive than the initial hop.

Event: Hammer Throw
Type: Performance (measurement)
Number of Players (concurrently): 1
How To Unlock: Initially Available
Description: Throw the hammer as far as you can.
How To Play: When your turn comes up, press A to lift the hammer, then spin it 
as fast as you can around your head. Eventually, you'll get a countdown until 
when you have to throw it by - throw it before the countdown reaches 0 by 
pressing B to let go.
Tips: There are two main facets of this event: spinning and throwing. For 
spinning, spin the controller as fast as you possibly can (duh). The more 
delicate part of the event tends to be the actual throwing - you might find you 
quite frequently hit the poles on either side. The key I've found is to throw a 
little bit later than feels natural. As long as you get it through the opening 
it'll fly the same distance; where you release it doesn't matter.

Event: Javelin Throw
Type: Performance (measurement)
Number of Players (concurrently): 1
How To Unlock: Initially Available
Description: Throw the javelin as far as you can.
How To Play: Start running the standard way, then swing the controller to throw 
the javelin. Time the throw so you don't cross the foul line.
Tips: Throwing the javelin is delicate here like in the long jump and triple 
jump, but also delicate is making sure you don't cross the foul line. You'll 
actually keep going 3-4 steps after you make the throwing motion, so fouls are 
frequent. The best time to throw the javelin is just past halfway down the on-
screen meter; any later and you'll likely cross the foul line.

Event: High Jump
Type: Performance (measurement, iterative)
Number of Players (concurrently): 1
How To Unlock: Unlock Planet Circuit (Medal in Stardust Circuit)*
Description: Specify a height for the bar, then jump over it. You'll get 3 
tries per height, and you can keep going until you fail or until you reach the 
maximum height (2.6m).
How To Play: Specify your height, then run in the standard motion until your 
speed locks. When you reach the pink-to-blue mat, jump as late as you can 
(closest to the end of the blue area). As you go over the bar, jerk the nunchuk 
upwards to pull your legs over the bar.
Tips: Running speed, as always, is important, but mostly the entire event 
revolves around the initial jump and the nunchuk jerk. Unlike the long jump, 
there is no sensitivity to how strong you pull the controller. Instead, your 
jump height is dependent on your running speed and how late you jump from the 
mat - so, jump as late as possible. When going over the bar, pull up on the 
nunchuk just before your legs pass over the bar to dodge it. As you 
succeessfully make jumps, you'll get "hot" and become more likely to make the 
following jump; for this reason, it's good to slowly raise your height from 
jump-to-jump than The highest possible score (2.6m) really isn't that hard to 
achieve in this event.

Event: Pole Vault
Type: Performance (measurement, iterative)
Number of Players (concurrently): 1
How To Unlock: Unlock Supernova Circuit (Medal in Meteorite Circuit)*
Description: Specify your height, then try to vault over it. You'll get 3 tries 
per height, and you can keep going until you fail or reach the maximum height.
How To Play: Specify your height, then run in the standard way until your speed 
locks. Like the high jump, you want to plant the vault as late in the blue area 
as you can. Plant the vault by swinging down, then make the running motion 
again to try and propel yourself up and over the bar.
Tips: Like the high jump, this event relies largely on timing on when you plant 
the bar. The higher you're trying, the shorter the blue area will be. The 
running motion at the end is important as well, but by now you should have 
plenty of practice with that.

 B> Gymnastics

Event: Trampoline
Type: Performance (evaluative)
Number of Players (concurrently): 1
How To Unlock: Initially Available
Description: As you bounce on the trampoline, execute tricks by pressing A, B 
and twisting the controller.
How To Play: At the start, bounce on the trampoline by jerking upwards on the 
controller just before you hit the trampoline on each fall. Once you start 
bouncing above 7 feet, you'll begin to receive tricks to execute involving 
press A, B and twisting the controller. As you successfully execute tricks, the 
tricks will get more complicated. Jerk upwards each time you near the 
trampoline to jump higher and have more time to execute subsequent tricks.
Tips: As is becoming far and far more common, there really isn't a trick to 
doing well in this event - just practice. At first, twisting the controller for 
part of a trick seems very non-intuitive, but you'll get used to it. Jerking up 
on the controller to jump higher is crucial to having enough time to complete 
the more difficult tricks. According to Vgamer23, playing the event with a
character with a higher skill stat will result in a shorter list of commands.

Event: Vault
Type: Performance (evaluative)
Number of Players (concurrently): 1
How To Unlock: Unlock Supernova Circuit (Medal in Meteorite Circuit)*
Description: After jumping off the vault, execute flips by dropping the two 
parts of the controller, then stick the landing.
How To Play: This event can be divided into four parts. First, run as usual 
(getting old, isn't it?). Second, jump off the vault by jerking up on the 
WiiMote right as your character lands on the springboard (this will control how 
high you get and, in turn, how long you have to execute tricks). Third, while 
in the air, execute flips via one of the following motions: swing the WiiMote 
down; swing the nunchuk down; swing both down at once. There are flip combos as 
well, though it's rather difficult to pinpoint what they are. Last, when you 
land, make the running motion again to balance yourself.
Tips: Running is still running. Springing is like the step and jump of the 
triple jump - swing the moment you hit the board. Annoyingly, one of the best 
way to execute tricks is just to swing madly to ensure you execute a new trick 
the moment the last one is done. The only general tip is to try not to be 
executing a flip when you land.

 C> Shooting

Event: Skeet
Type: Performance (measurement)
Number of Players (concurrently): 1
How To Unlock: Initially Available
Description: Using your rifle, shoot the clays as they fly out.
How To Play: The event is divided into 8 rounds. In each round, you need to 
accurately stop the moving dot when it's over the center of the heart. The 
closer you come, the larger your area of shooting will be for that round. Then, 
shoot the clays as they are fired from cannons on either side.
Tips: Correctly stopping the dot in the middle of the heart is critical to this 
event; or, more specifically, stopping it within the two center rings is 
critical. You can still be quite successful if you stop the dot in the outer 
ring, but stopping it outside either ring is a recipe for disaster. Anticipate 
the dot's movement. Then, for the actual shooting, pay attention to the arrows 
at side of the screen to see where the next clay will be coming from. By 
default, I recommend aiming on where the cannon in your view is pointing; clays 
shot by the cannon you can see tend to spend less time on the screen. Also, 
when two clays are flying at once, aim for the one coming from the closer 
cannon first.

 D> Rowing

Event: Single Sculls
Type: Race (rowing)
Number of Players (concurrently): 1-4 humans, 1-3 computers (4 max)
How To Unlock: Unlock Moonlight Circuit (Medal in Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and 
Saturn Circuits)*
Description: Row to the finish before the other competitors by pressing the 
displayed button combinations and pulling on the controllers.
How To Play: From the start, button combinations will be displayed - Z+B, Z+A 
and A+B. When a combination is displayed, hold down those buttons and quickly 
pull back on the controllers to 'row'. Towards the end, the combinations will 
disappear and you'll just need to row madly to the finish.
Tips: Usually Z+B is the combination for the first 10-12 strokes. After that, 
Z+A will start to appear occasionally with increasing frequency. Then, finally, 
A+B will start to appear. Towards the end of the race, the three will appear 
with pretty equal frequency. After the buttons stop appearing, just rotate the 
controllers madly to finish out the race. One reader also suggests
intentionally NOT using the nunchuk so you need only concentrate on two
buttons: A and B.

 E> Archery

Event: Archery
Type: Performance (measurement)
Number of Players (concurrently): 1
How To Unlock: Unlock Stardust Circuit (Medal in Moonlight Circuit)*
Description: Over three rounds, try to his the center of the target.
How To Play: For each arrow, hold down A and B and pull back on the WiiMote to 
focus on the target. Tilt the WiiMote and nunchuk to align the two crosshairs 
one over the other - they're flashing when they're aligned. Then, release A+B 
to fire. Remember to factor in the wind.
Tips: Get a stress ball; this is, in my opinion, easily the most aggravating 
event in the game. Aiming the nunchuk is extremely delicate and difficult to 
master, and it's very hard to hold the WiiMote steady while releasing A+B. 
There are a few ways to counter this. First of all, don't release the moment 
the crosshairs start flashing over the location you want; hold them still for a 
second and make sure they aren't still moving before you release A+B. Try to 
hold the controllers against your legs or a table or other firm object to keep 
them from reacting to your own twicthes. As far as the wind, a wind less than 
3mph tends to have no effect; 4-6mph warrants a slight adjustment; 7mph or 
above warrants a major adjustment. One reader also suggests releasing the B 
button while aiming (the arrow doesn't fire until you release both buttons) so 
that your hand doesn't twitch as much when you release. A player named Kevin
has suggested that, when dealing with diagonal winds, the horizontal wind
affects the shot more than the vertical wind, so adjust accordingly.

Event: 100m Freestyle
Type: Race (swimming)
Number of Players (concurrently): 1-4 humans, 1-7 computers (8 max)
How To Unlock: Initially Available
Description: Race to the finish using your character's swim style.
How To Play: Hold down B to charge up before the race, then swing the WiiMote 
down the moment the race begins. Then, using your character's swim stroke (I

demonstration), swim as fast as you can. Your stamina meter will decrease as 
you swim; as it gets near the bottom, press B right as it empties to receive a 
speed boost and a stamina boost. Swing the controller down when you reach the 
wall to turn around without losing speed.
Tips: This event is all about timing the stamina meter. Swimming fast is 
important, but easy to master; it's important to note that none of the strokes 
require timing, so ignore your character's on-screen depiction and just swim as 
fast as you can. For the stamina meter, press B right as it hits empty to get 
your boost - this is critical to doing well. For the turn, just swing down as 
soon as you see the icon. Sometimes it will feel like your character isn't 
reacting to your input at all (randomly slowing down, etc.), but keep trying 
and you'll recover.

Event: 4x100m Freestyle
Type: Race (swimming, relay)

How To Unlock: Initially Available
Description: Race to the finish with each of four characters; you don't get to 
choose the characters.
How To Play: Just like the 100m Freestyle, hold B to charge up before starting, 
then swing down to jump in the water. Swim as fast as you can using your 
character's stroke, swing down to turn, then swing down again to hand off to 
your next teammate.
Tips: This race can be aggravating because you can't see your teammates' 
strokes before they jump in the water; but there's a little demo alongside you 
as you swim, so you should be able to catch on pretty quickly. Other than that, 
it's exactly like the 100m Freestyle, so see those tips.

Type: Versus (fighting)

How To Unlock: Initially Available
Description: Score 15 points by striking your opponent before they do the same 
to you.
How To Play: Use the joystick to move back and forth (twice to move faster) and 
the WiiMote to jab at your opponent. Hold A while swinging the WiiMote to parry 
your opponent's attacks. If you successfully parry, you'll create an opening 
for an attack.
Tips: Finally, an event with some strategy. There's a lot of effective tactics 
to employ in this event. For one, back away from your opponent, then double-
move towards them and immediately jab; usually you'll get an attack in, 
especially against the easier opponents. This is especially effective when you 
back the opponent up against their side. Another effective strategy is to hold 
A and carefully watch for when your opponent begins their attack; there's 
enough time to react and parry, forming an opening to attack them; you can also 
just back up when they strike, then quickly counterstrike, though this doesn't 
have any benefits over parrying. This strategy is especially effective when 
you're backed against your own side. Less complicated strategies include 
jabbing madly against them, or parrying madly until you succeed and then 
counterattacking. Note also that the opponent's eyes will flash just before
they thrust; if you notice it, it will give you a split second advantage. One
reader suggests intentionally NOT using the nunchuk and moving back and forth
with the D-pad. I, personally, find this more difficult, but if you're having
trouble it's worth a try.

Type: Versus (volley)

How To Unlock: Initially Available
Description: Win a game of table tennis (first to 11) against your opponent.
How To Play: To serve, pull the controller up to toss the ball, then swing a 
forehand to serve. When the ball comes back to you, swing either a forehand or 
a backhand (depending on the ball's and your player's locations) to return it. 
Special shots include holding A to make it easier to return a fast shot 
(although the return is softer), or holding B to slam the ball (although 
careful timing is required to successfully slam).
Tips: Oftentimes this event will end up feeling like you just have to return 
enough volleys until the opponent messes up. Overall, this event is pretty 
annoying - the mapping of the ping pong swings, especially the backhand, is 
poor. The forehand is okay, but when you swing a backhand, make sure to swing 
very, very deliberately - no quick twitches like in Wii Tennis. The A special 
shot is intended to make it easier to return your opponent's slams, so use it 
accordingly if you're having trouble. The B special shot (slam) is very 
difficult to time properly unless the ball is coming slowly. To slam, swing a 
good half-second before the ball reaches your paddle. My overall strategy is to 
hold the controller straight in front of me (for each access to forehand or 
backhand) while holding the A button while awaiting the opponent's return - 
then, if they slam it, you're ready for it. If it's not a slam, you can choose 
to return regularly or attempt a slam in return.

How To Unlock: Unlock Moonlight Circuit (Medal in Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and 
Saturn Circuits)*
Description: Picture Mario Kart on foot. Win the race by dodging obstacles, 
jumping hurdles and using items.
How To Play: From the start, run in the typical motion, although you don't need 
to keep running - once you reach top speed, you'll stay at that speed unless 
something slows you down. Press B to jump over obstacles (the sand and 
hurdles), and use the stick on the nunchuk to go left and right. Running 
through item boxes gets you items, which you can use by pressing A.
Tips: Like said above, this event is basically a poor man's Mario Kart. 
Unfortunately, it comes across very haphazardly. I haven't really come across 
any strategies for doing well in this race, it's just too all over the place to 
really warrant a plan. Pray to whatever deity you believe in that an opponent 
doesn't use a ghost when you're in first.

Event: Dream Platform
Type: Performance (evaluative, battle)
Number of Players (concurrently): 1-4 humans, 1-3 computers (4 max)
How To Unlock: Unlock Galaxy Circuit (Medal in Cosmos Circuit)*
Description: As you fall from the sky, avoid blocks, collect and use items and 
slip through rings to do tricks for extra points. The goal is to get the most 
points.
How To Play: Use the joystick on the nunchuk to steer (note that the controls 
are NOT inverted), and tilt the WiiMote back to slow your descent (leave it 
level to speed up). This is not a race, so you can take your time. Avoid the 
blocks (you'll lose points for colliding with the) and go through the rings to 
get entered into a trampoline-style trick mode for extra points.
Tips: This event is quite fun in general, but the best way to succeed is to hit 
as many rings as possible. Your computer opponents don't focus on tricks very 
much, so you're free to mop up in this area. Hit the rings and avoid the bricks 
for maximum scores.

Event: Dream Fencing
Type: Versus (fighting)
Number of Players (concurrently): 1-2 humans, 1 computer (2 max)
How To Unlock: Unlock Satellite Circuit (Medal in Comet Circuit)*
Description: Just like regular fencing, but with super-powered charge attacks, 
and hit points instead of points for each hit.
How To Play: For the most part, this game is just like the original fencing 
game, and most of the same strategies apply. The two changes are that hit 
points are used, and there are superpowered attacks. The hit points don't 
change anything much. Superpowered attacks become available as you hit and 
parry your opponent (measured in the meter at the bottom of the screen) and can 
be activated by holding down A+B, then jabbing.
Tips: The strategies here really don't change much from the original fencing. 
Hit points don't change anything, you're still trying to hit the opponent until 
they're finished. The only thing that really changes strategy is the superpower 
attacks. These attacks give you a way out when you're cornered, but more 
importantly let you completely blow your competitor off the stage if used when 
they're backed against their own side (they'll return, but they'll lose extra 
health). It's imported to note that superpowered attacks CAN be parried just 
like any other; the only benefits are the increased damage and the knockback.

Event: Dream Table Tennis

How To Unlock: Unlock Sunlight Circuit (Medal in Satellite Circuit)*
Description: Just like the original table tennis, but with superpowered attacks 
and a different scoring mechanism.
How To Play: Play proceeds just like the regular table tennis, but for scoring, 
instead of the winner of each volley getting a point, the winner of each volley 
gets a number of points equal to how many volleys there were in the sequence - 
so if you and your opponent hit it back and forth 5 times, the winner of the 
volley will get 5 points. Throughout the game, you'll charge up superpowered 
attacked which can be triggered by pressing A+B when the ball is near you. 
Different special attacks have different effects - some make the ball invisible 
for the return, some make it go super fast, some make it take bizarre spins, 
etc.
Tips: The strategy for this game is pretty much like regular table tennis - the 
different scoring doesn't change the fact that your goal is to win as many 
volleys as possible. Some people say it's good to use your special attacks when 
a volley gets long to get as many points as possible, but I recommend saving 
your specials for returning the computer's specials; they tend to be much more 
adept at returning special shots than we are, but using a special shot after 
they've used one guarantees a return.

Free circuit is basically a free play of sorts in which you can choose (or have 
randomly selected) events for you to compete in against either the computers or
friends. Only events that have been unlocked otherwise can be participated in.
The '4' and '8' refer to events that involve 4 or 8 participants. Typically,
8-participant events are events when all participants compete simultaneously
but not directly against one another (such as races, where one participant's
actions do not affect the other participants), or events where participants
take turns competing. 4-participant events are typically events where
participants compete directly against each other, such as tennis and fencing.

Each character has 6 missions associated with them (you must complete the first 
5 to unlock the 6th). These events vary greatly in style and purpose; some will 
require you to finish a race in a specific time, some will require you to 
finish a race in a specific place, and some will require you to score a 
specific number of points (in fencing or gymnastics, for example).

I no longer own the game and never completed the missions, so I do not have
any meaningful advice. However, I do have two bits to contribute:

The 17th crown is received by earning the crowns for all 16 characters.

To complete Peach's Hammer Throw mission (shout three time after throwing the
hammer), press A after throwing the hammer. I'm not sure why this isn't 
mentioned in the instructions anywhere, but now you know.

Are there any unlockable characters?
-As of the time of this publication, there are NO known unlockable characters.

Do you recommend buying this game?
-I recommend renting the game first. The game is small enough that you can 
unlock everything fairly quickly, so you may end up playing it for 5 days and 
never touching it again if you buy it. Rent it first, and if you like it enough 
to buy it, you'll still have your saved data on your console.

Are there any other ways to unlock given circuits or events?
-Yes, absolutely. I, personally, unlocked the Moonlight Circuit before ever 
even playing the Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury or Venus circuits. The methods posted 
in this FAQ are guaranteed to work, but they are not guaranteed to be the only 
nor easiest way.

Who's the best character to play as?
-There isn't one. All the characters' stats add up to about the same, so no 
character is overall better than any other. Some characters are better suited 
to some events; I'll detail which in later versions of this FAQ.

How do I execute 'Shouts' for Peach's Hammer Throw mission?
-Press A after throwing the hammer.

What is the Emblem after the Blaze Emblem?
-The Thanks for Playing Emblem, obtained for playing the game 50 times. Thanks
