It might surprise you to know that, originally, Epic Games didn’t plan for Fortnite to be a free-to-play battle royale game. At least not first and foremost, as the PvE “Save the World” mode was all that the title had to offer when it launched as a paid product in July 2017. This PvE mode still exists within the game, but how then do you access it? Most importantly, is Fortnite Save the World free? Here’s what you need to know about how to access Fortnite PvE and whether or not it’s free-to-play.
Fortnite PvE | Is Save the World free-to-play?
Although the Fortnite PvP mode (battle royale) is entirely free-to-play, that isn’t the case where Save the World is concerned. At the time of writing, Fortnite‘s PvE element is still in Early Access and gaining entry requires players to purchase one of several available “Founder’s Packs.”
These bundles offer incentives for early adopters, though whether or not that’s enough reason to part with any cash (when you could instead keep enjoying Fortnite Battle Royale for free) is decided on an individual basis. One thing that’s certain, however, is that once initial development on Save the World is complete all Fortnite players will be able to access PvE at no additional cost.
Developer Epic Games hasn’t set an official Fortnite Save the World free-to-play release date since delaying it past the initial plan, though rest assured that you will be able to enjoy PvE — be that alone or with friends — free of charge at some point in the future.
While you can’t currently play Fortnite PvE for free in 2020, it’s possible that the launch could be set for later in the year. If not this year, then at a later date that hopefully isn’t too far off into the distant future.
