Always pet Toto before you stop playing the game. This will make him happy, and therefore produce the full amount of Ink possible for one hour.
If you want to play this game for any considerable amount of time, you'll either have to cough up some dough from extra currency, or you'll need to be very conservative with the way you spend the Gold you earn naturally.
