Destiny 2 crossplay support has been confirmed for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. This means that, for example, a player on Xbox One will be able to team up with someone who has the Xbox Series X version. This “Intergenerational Cross-Play” was confirmed by Bungie during the June 9, 2020 livestream, which addressed the game’s future. However, the topic becomes a little confusing when you think of trying to pair an Xbox Series X player with a PS5 player. Here’s what you need to know about cross-play support in Destiny 2.
Does Destiny 2 have cross-play support?
Destiny 2 will have cross-play support in the near future. Developer Bungie has confirmed that players on current-gen systems will be able to group up and play with users on next-gen systems. This means PS4 players can play with PS5 players.
However, it’s not yet clear if players on either Xbox will be able to play with those on a PlayStation system. In an ideal world, when it comes to allowing all members of the community to have fun together, all Destiny 2 players would be able to join up, regardless of system. With other games like Fortnite managing to bridge the gap between Xbox and PlayStation, perhaps Destiny 2 will be able to do the same, even across console generations.
We await further confirmation from Bungie about whether PlayStation and Xbox players will be able to join each other. PC players are also no doubt wondering if console players will soon be available to fill their matchmaking pools for cooperative and competitive play, too. Here’s hoping we hear more soon!
Speaking of cross-generational compatibility, Bungie has also announced that users will be getting free next-gen upgrades. This means that if you’re on PS4 or Xbox One, you’ll be getting the PS5 or Xbox Series X version of the game for free, including all of your expansion passes and other content that you’ve invested in. This is good news for those looking to continue the Destiny experience on the new generation of consoles.
