Despite all of the controversy, The Last of Us 2 sales figures are very impressive. Since the game is proving to be a moneymaker for Sony, it’d make sense for them to bring the game to a new audience on the upcoming PlayStation 5. Is that something they actually have planned, though? Will we get a The Last of Us 2 PS5 version in the form of The Last of Us 2 Remastered? Stick around for everything you need to know.
Is The Last of Us 2 coming to PS5?
Currently, Naughty Dog hasn’t shared any plans to developed and release The Last of Us 2 Remastered for PlayStation 5. Although there’s no The Last of Us 2 PS5 release date for a dedicated next-gen version, we do know that the PS4 original will be fully playable via PlayStation 5 backward compatibility.
This news comes straight from PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan, who told CNET that the existing PlayStation 4 version of The Last of Us 2 “will run on the PS5 without issue” in a May 2020 interview. At this stage, it’s unknown whether playing the game in this manner on PS5 will offer any tangible benefits. It’s possible that in order to see an improved visual and/or technical performance, we’ll need to keep our fingers crossed for a potential The Last of Us 2 Remastered.
The long-awaited sequel has proven to be divisive, though the conversation surrounding it is also a lucrative one. With The Last of Us 2 launching so close to the PS5’s holiday 2020 launch window, it’d make sense for Sony Interactive Entertainment to seek to capitalize with a bespoke PlayStation 5 port. The original followed a similar path, hitting PS3 at the end of its life before getting a PS4 remaster one year later.
The Last of Us 2 PlayStation 5 will be a reality thanks to backward compatibility; whether The Last of Us 2 Remastered will happen remains unknown. We’ll keep you posted on any updates regarding a next-gen version of TLoU2.
